Parks and Recreation
Somehow I missed the announcement of the long-anticipated new NBC show helmed by The Office’s Greg Daniels and Mike Schur, Parks and Recreation. Originally rumored to be a direct spin-off of The Office—which is one of my favorite TV shows—Parks and Recreation is now a standalone project but retains The Office’s mockumentary format.
Amy Poehler stars as Leslie Knope, a mid-level bureaucrat in...

An awesome list of tag lines on from the blog of Steven Garrity, who had worked on the Mozilla Visual Identity Team.
My inability to come up with a snappy and creative title for this tumblelog contributed to my long-delayed theme development/rehabilitation.
What do you think of ‘Machine Readable’, ‘Truths, Albeit Insignificant’, ‘Extra Ordinary’, or ‘Formatted Text from an Unformatted Mind’?

Microsoft's anti-Mac campaign underhanded,... →
bravelittlememe:
In the past, even the somewhat transparent and woefully artless “I’m a PC” campaign maintained a primarily positive spin: by concentrating on how the ideal of a PC can be transposed onto everyday people and their lives, Microsoft attempted to evoke a sense of affinity to its platform of choice. Not so, unfortunately, with the latest two marketing salvos.
Great summary of the...

An unofficial repository of Windows Vista visual glitches and mistakes. Every bug is tagged with a severity and impact level (reminiscent of Trac) along with a ‘Digg style’ vote-based scoring system.
Microsoft employees apparently visit the site because several UX shortcomings have already been corrected for Windows 7.
I would like to see a similar repository for Mac OS X, because even though...

Oh shi—, life hacks. Embarrassingly, the article is about why 500 Days of Summer is the writer’s least anticipated film out of all the non-competitive Sundance ’09 entries, when it’s clearly my most anticipated film. But the man’s got a point.
And I’ll bet his mind changes when he...

What Should I Read Next? →
This is too awesome. I used to be an avid book reader when I was younger—I would exit the nearby public library every other weekend with 20, 25 books in my backpack—but unfortunately, the Internet kidnapped me as I got older and I basically stopped reading books for fun or leisure. I’ve been telling myself I should start reading more books again, and this will help so much!

Interesting little site that recommends music from your three favorite bands.
Brand New + The Format + MGMT = Girl Talk apparently.
Girl Talk has been on my ‘to get to’ list for a while now so perhaps it’s fairly accurate. I clicked ‘I don’t know it!’ to get another band and I got Yeasayer, which according to Wikipedia, has toured with MGMT. Interesting. Onto my ‘to get’ list it goes. Yeah, I...

Penis game →
Came across this hilarious Wikipedia entry while researching for my Settlers of Catan post.
I fondly remember frequent bouts of the penis game during school when we should be working or reading—and if I recall correctly, it even survived into high school, at least during classes run by substitute teachers. Ridiculously fun times. I would’ve never guessed it would warrant its own wiki page, but...

Settlers of Catan
A fascinating multiplayer board game designed by German dental technician Klaus Teuber, Settlers of Catan is the first German-style board game to achieve popularity outside of Europe. It’s been sold in Germany since 1995 but only recently became known in the United States.
Its rapid ascent into widespread appeal is due to its remarkably varied and intelligent gameplay, a sharp contrast from...

Harry Beck’s unsolicited 1951 Paris Métro map...
Detail from Harry Beck’s rejected 1951 Paris Métro map design.
I’m a big fan of Harry Beck’s work in visual information design and have always wondered his ideas never spread outside of his famous London Underground map design. It turns out he did; he submitted two unsolicited redesigns of Paris’ iconic Métropolitain subway system map, but the designs were rejected because the French in 1951...

The World’s Biggest Diamond Heist →
Joshua Davis of Wired:
In February 2003, Notarbartolo was arrested for heading a ring of Italian thieves. They were accused of breaking into a vault two floors beneath the Antwerp Diamond Center and making off with at least $100 million worth of loose diamonds, gold, jewelry, and other spoils. The vault was thought to be impenetrable. It was protected by 10 layers of security, including infrared...

Syracuse Defeats UConn in a Marathon Game
The New York Times reports that Syracuse’s Orange beat UConn’s Huskies 127–117 in an epic six-overtime basketball game tonight at Madison Square Garden.
I’m not a big college basketball watcher but even I know this is going to be a much talked-about game for a while; it was the longest game in Big East history and tied for the second-longest game in NCAA Division I history. My school’s team is...

The video is a little long—Bret’s Casio DG-20 malfunctions at the beginning of the show which led to some hilariously awkward (or is it awkwardly hilarious?) improv from Jemaine and Bret—but totally worth the hour of your time.

128 kbps vs. 320 kbps →
Can you tell the difference between a 128 kbps and 320 kbps MP3? It’s no double-blind ABX test, but you’d be hard-pressed to bluff your way through this one.
I would’ve liked to see the MP3 encoder specifications and a few more samples because one test is hardly conclusive, but it’s already more than enough to illustrate the advantages of the larger file size required by 320 kbps...

Tumblr bought the iPhone app Tumblrette and made it free. I think it’s a great move because I’d venture a guess that a large number of Tumblr users have iPhones and the tumblelog form just begs for mobile blogging. The reasons for me to get an iPhone are increasing everyday.
Ars Technica provides a good first look at the iPhone app. Download Tumblr for iPhone and start moblogging away!

Tetris HD →
Imagine Tetris in a field thats hundreds of blocks wide and where each piece is barely a few pixels large. I can’t decide if it’s totally hilarious or totally sad. Maybe it’s both. I spent four minutes trying to clear one line, but fucked it up near the middle.
Protip: If you hold down the enter key, it will create an abstract portrait worthy of MoMA.
