Charlie Rose Sacrificed Face for MacBook Air →
Thirteen/WNET personality Charlie Rose suffered an eye injury after tripping in a New York City pothole, and quick thinking enabled him to sacrifice his face for his brand-new MacBook Air. Is it sad that if I were in this situation, I think I would’ve done the same thing? Your face heals, but a MacBook Air only stays pristine once. What great publicity for Apple.

iPhone 2.0 SDK: How Signing Certificates Work →
An incredibly concise and well-written piece by Daniel Eran Dilger and Jason Smith on the implications and effect of Apple’s insistence that all iPhone developers must digitally sign their applications with a $99 certificate. It includes comparisons to game console SDKs and similar business models and why Apple’s makes the most sense by far. A definite must-read.

Parallax scrolling effect in CSS →
Parallax scrolling is a psuedo-3D effect often used in side scrolling games to create depth. In this article Clearleft lead designer Paul Annett explains how he used the effect to great success on their newly launched Silverback site. Paul Annett creates an impressive pseudo-3D effect via browser window resizing (akin to the parallax scrolling effect used in games like the original Sonic the...

Simplicity →
Hilarious and saddening at the same time. Arguably this is a best versus worst case scenario, but with all the junkware out there created by clueless programmers without a design bone in their entire body, you’d be surprised at how accurate this really is. I love the nested window with its own scroll bar. More love to the 10 buttons framing the bottom.

“You know, that puddle should have its own blog.”
– Some Brooklynite noticed a very persistent puddle on Jay and Plymouth in DUMBO, Brooklyn and decided it was inspiring enough to create a photolog chronicling its daily trials and tribulations. Without a doubt, one of the more esoteric blogs I have ever come across.

A sensitive topic
testumblrone: Okay, I’m just gonna jump right in. The topic is: The grooming and trimming of the hair surrounding your man parts. Some of us do a little cleanup, some of us shave everything bald, and some of us do nothing at all. I suppose first and foremost it’s a personal decision, but there must be externalities which affect it as well. Maybe you do it at the request of your special lady...

The Trouble with Steve Jobs →
Steve Jobs knew about his pancreatic tumor since October 2003, a full ten months before he finally agreed to let doctors operate on it. I don’t think many people outside of Steve’s inner circle knew just how perilous the situation really was, and for good reason. A CEO with an often fatal cancer certainly wouldn’t bode well for Apple’s stock price. The well written and researched article...

ThinkPad X300 Benchmarks →
CNet reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 ultraportable notebook where they found it slower, bigger, more expensive, and had lower battery life than the comparable Apple MacBook Air. Yet the reviewer seemed far more critical of the MacBook Air than the X300. Curious. The MacBook Air aced all their performance tests (the faster CPU of the bunch helps, certainly) yet the review seems to imply that it...

What Apple Doesn’t Get Right
Apple gets a lot of things. They get design, they get usability, they get aesthetics. They understand that small groups of talented people works better than design-by-committee. They understand that in most cases, fewer choices are better than many. They also understand synergy between applications is often more important than the number of features crammed into them. And they definitely know how...
